invitation and reflects a wide
cross-section of community
representation.
ROTARIANS

variety of humanitarian,
educational, and cultural exchange
programs that touch people’s lives

South
Hill Club Receives International P. R.
Award
The
South Hill Rotary Club was the recipient
of the most prestigious Rotary
International Public Relations Award for
the 2007-2008 Rotary year for District
7600 during their meeting 10/30/2008.
The
Public Relations Award recognizes Rotary
clubs that have generated increased
awareness and understanding of Rotary
through outstanding media coverage or
other public relations efforts.
Competition and selection of winning
entries take place at the district level
and it is one of the highest honors a
club can receive and it is the first
Rotary International Award for the club
in its 80 year history. Past District
Governor Jim Pierce (for Rotary Year
2007-2008), and current District
Governor Bill Pollard, as well as the RI

Chairperson/Coordinator Chuck Kinsey
were on hand to make the presentations.
The presentations were made to P. R.
Director Lisa Clary and Past Club
President Tommy Zincone. The club
was also honored to have present at the
meeting Senator Frank Ruff, Delegate

Hill Town Manager Kim Callis as they
came by special invitation in support of
the club.
The
award was based on a narrative submitted
by the Public Relations Director Lisa
Clary extolling the numerous activities
of the club and how they are publicized
in the community in their efforts to
bring awareness and visibility to the
club and its participation in their
hometown. The club utilizes three local
newspapers, including The Mecklenburg
Sun, The South Hill Enterprise and The
News Progress, along with Lakes Media
KISS Country radio, TV 16. Also various
community and club websites are updated
with South Hill Rotary club news. The

WORLDWIDE
ROTARY PROJECTS
POLIO
PLUS
Although
Rotary clubs develop autonomous service
programs, all Rotarians worldwide are
united in a campaign for the global
eradication of polio. In the 1980s,
Rotarians raised US$240 million to
immunize the children of the world; by
2005, Rotary's centenary year and the
target date for the certification of a
polio-free world, the PolioPlus
program will have contributed US $500
million to this cause. In addition, Rotary
has provided an army of volunteers to
promote and assist at national
immunization days in polio-endemic
countries around the world. Recently Bill
Gates presented a $100 million dollar
challenge to RI. The "Bill and Linda
Gates Foundation" informed Rotary
International if Rotary will contribute
$100 million the Foundation will
contribute $255 million. The fund
raising is currently under way.

ROTARIANS
AGAINST HUNGER
Another
association for Rotarians is the
"RAH" (Rotarians Against Hunger)
partnership with "Stop Hunger
Now". The goal of the partnership as
with the ending of polio worldwide is to
end hunger on a global scale.
"RAH" was formed by Rotarian Ray
Buchanan, also President of Stop Hunger
Now, and Rotarian Hal Smith. Ray is a
Rotarian in the Raleigh Rotary Club and
Hal is a Rotarian with the East Chapel
Hill Rotary Club both in North Carolina.
It has grown in their District 7710 clubs
and is expanding to other districts and
clubs worldwide. The links below provide
more information about how everyone can be
involved in this worthy endeavor.

Rotarian
Lee Warren, a member of the South Hill
Club since 2006, is the Virginia Director
for "Stop Hunger Now". Below are
links to articles and videos about Lee and
the "SHN" organization as well
as a video shot in Haiti where current
projects are underway. Our club has been
involved with some local "food
packaging" events in South Hill and
also events held at the 2008-2009 and the
2009-2010 District Conferences.
