South Hill Club members attended the event.

Local Annual Activities Highway
Clean Up
The South Hill Rotary Club participates
in local activities such as the area roadway clean-up project.
Rotarians shed their business clothes, get "casual" and go
about cleaning up their assigned section of roadway on Highway
One North. It takes cooperation and hard work but it is great
fun if you don't fall out of the truck!

After the hard
work and "foolishness" we enjoy a casual dinner.
Some have not
quite gotten the idea about how far to go?

Rotarian Volunteers

The South Hill
Revitalization Committee held a highway clean up session
Monday night as part of a program that will hopefully spark
renewed interest in the "Adopt a Highway" program to help
keep South Hill clean and attractive for visitors. Several
groups have already signed on to adopt a highway and more
are welcome to do so. For more information on how you can
become involved in this project, which they hope to keep
ongoing through the warmer months, contact Robin Allen at
Dogwood Graphics or Sandra Kinker at Harper Jewelry in South
Hill. Monday night the group, SHRC members and concerned
citizens started at the South Hill Presbyterian Church and
cleaned the section down to Farrar Funeral Home on North
Mecklenburg Ave. Pictured are Meredith Allen, Robin Allen,
Alex Robertson, Teresa Robertson, Sandra Kinker, Midge
Shipley, Jackie Hinman and Rotarians Tommy Zincone and Beth
Smith. (Lisa Clary Photo)

Lunch Buddies
Another activity supported by the South
Hill Rotary Club is the local school "Lunch Buddies" program.
Rotarians are assigned a particular class at the local
elementary school and we join this class during their lunch
break once each week. Often the children convince the Rotarian to
remain and to read to the
class and that's when the fun begins.

"Lunch Buddies" Rotarians Bruce Settle,
Herbert Farrar, Carol Crough, Jimmy Keith Crowder and Tom
Smith team up with their classes for some lunch time fun.

Also at "Lunch Buddies" Rotarians
Tom Leggett, Frank Nanney and Lisa Clary enjoy some fun with
their classes.
Rotarians
represent approximately 33% of the volunteers for this
worthwhile project.
Some of our "Lunch
Buddies" participated in a National Event called "Reading
Across America". Tom Leggett, Carol Crough and Lisa Clary all
read to their respective classes.

The last of the
lunch buddies parties for this year. Rotarians Bruce Settle,
Tommy Zincone and Mickey Moore with their classes.

Accelerated
Reader Program
Rotary members
also are very involved in the "Accelerated Reader Program".
This program encourages young people at the elementary level
to start reading more. An ice cream party is then arranged for
all the participants at the end of the school year.
2006 "Pizza Party"

2007 "Bingo Party"

The
Accelerated Reading Team of Rotarians Dave Yocum,
Jerry Klingenberg, Frank Nanney, Lisa Clary, Tommy Zincone,
Mickey Moore, Tom Smith, Steven Stanley
and Tom Leggett see
to it all the kids have a great celebration of their reading
accomplishments. Great D-Day shirt Frank.

This six weeks got
our students outdoors for some playtime and a chance to
embarrass the adults and their lack of sports skills.
2007 Another
"Bingo Party" for this 6 weeks.

Last of the
Accelerated Reader parties for this year.

Now unless I am
wrong these parties are for the "children"...right?
Oh well, maybe these are the children.

The best photo of
what a great time this is for everyone. This is what service
is all about folks!

Teacher
Appreciation Day
Each year as the
end of the school year approaches the Rotary Club provides
doughnuts to the local teachers as a gift for their service
and patience with the students. This year more than 40 dozen
doughnuts were enjoyed by these dedicated servants of our
public school system. I must say I believe some of the
Rotarians dipped into the doughnuts, they look happy!

This years
chaiman was Emily Brooks (center) in the first photo.

Blue Ribbon School
Rotarians turn out to support our "Blue Ribbon School" at
Buckhorn Elementary Schools celebration of this tremendous
achievement. Rotarians Beth Smith, Bruce Settle, Randy Cash
and John Stockton listen to guest speakers. Attending but not
pictured were Mickey Smith and Tommy Zincone.

Farmers Night

agriculture as a foremost product provided locally and
globally. These products are a major asset to our local economy.

"The Embers" and a lake party at the home of one of our
members.
