"Feed
The Dragons"
For
the third year in a row local South Hill businessman
Dwayne Gwaltney would like to have the community
support the Dragons by hosting meals for the players
prior to each home game. Dwayne is the owner of Town
and Country Cleaners and South Hill Paint Store and
is also a member of the South Hill Rotary Club. He
brought the idea to the members of the club to have
sponsors to help him with this project to support
the Park View Dragons football team and the local youth. The
Rotary Club is filled with local business people and
professionals who support the community on a daily
basis, so he thought this would be a good place to
start. As a result the South Hill Rotary Club will
host the first meal of the season for the team again
this year. Pictured are Dwayne and Club P. R.
Director Lisa Clary. (09/03/2010)

An
additional donation for this project from Rotarian
Susie Lucy.

"Feed
The Dragons"
The
Park View Dragons are getting fired up to set the
football field ablaze again this year and local
businesses are once again signing on to "Feed the
Dragons" before home games in South Hill. For the
second year in a row local South Hill businessman
Dwayne Gwaltney would like to have the community
support the Dragons by hosting meals for the players
prior to each home game. Dwayne is the owner of Town
and Country Cleaners and South Hill Paint Store and is
also a member of the South Hill Rotary Club. He
brought the idea to the members of the club that he is

will host the first meal of the season for the team.

Rotarian
Tommy Zincone prepared the lasagna meal for the
players. Assistance for the rest of the meal
preparation and serving was provided by Rotarians Tom
Smith, Mickey Moore, Joseph Taylor and Randy Cash. Ms.
June Nichols gave the club permission to use the
school cafeteria for the event and assisted with
preparing and serving the meal.

LaCrosse
Fest (08/29/2009)

Little
did we know as we started this day it would end up as
one of our absolute best and busiest days so far this
year. It literally seemed that the line of customers
would never stop. Some of our newest members got a
real taste of just how hard the club works. One of our
members (Jimmie Keith Crowder) was all dressed up with
no place to go so we taught him how to make cotton
candy and sent him off solo. The workers completely
enjoyed watching as the saga unfolded and apparently
so did some of the surrounding vendors.

Group
Study Exchange Team
Visits From Brazil (09/29/09-10/01/09)

The
G.S.E. Team is a Rotary Club Exchange Program that
allows two Rotary Districts to send representative teams to visit each others clubs. This
year District 7600 in Virginia and District 4650 in
Brazil are exchanging teams. The Brazilian team will
visit several clubs in Virginia and will be taken
for tours of their respective areas around the state by the
clubs being visited.
During
their visit to South Hill the G.S.E. Team experienced
a welcome dinner on arrival. Their first day allowed
time for visits to local businesses including many who
employ or are owned by Rotary
members. In the afternoon and evening the team enjoyed
a relaxing cruise on Lake Gaston. The next day was filled
with more tours of the local Elementary School for a
lunch buddy visit and a presentation at the middle
school. After an exhausting 2 days the team joined the
South Hill Club for dinner and entertained the club
with a presentation about Brazil. The team was
delivered to the Rotary Club of Franklin, VA on Friday
10/02/09.

District
Conference
Richmond, VA 10/09-10/11

Once
again the South Hill Club had good attendance at the
District Convention held at the Omni Hotel in
Richmond. Six members attended the conference and
enjoyed the fellowship that is so typical of this
event. The members took tours, heard a variety of
speakers and enjoyed meals and entertainment.
The
members are shown during in the photos above during
the Capital tour, the awards ceremonies and the
"Parade Of Presidents" dinner. This year the
club brought home 3 awards. The Public Relations Award
(second year in a row) due to the efforts of Rotarian
Lisa Clary, the International Service Award due to the
efforts of Rotarian Lee Warren with the Haiti Water
Filter Project, and the Club Bulletin Award due the
the efforts of Rotarians Randy Cash, Lisa Clary and
Tom Smith. This award encompasses the clubs weekly
bulletin (The Bright Leaf) and the Monthly newsletter
(Rotary Matters).
These
awards are given to clubs for their performance during
the previous Rotary Year. Last years Club President
Herbert Farrar is shown receiving the awards from
District Assistant Governor Bruce Settle.
Also
pictured is the Lake Country Club President Peter
Janson and his wife Celeste receiving the "Most
Improved Attendance" Award. Past District
Governor Bob Preston is shown presenting the
award.

Dictionary
Project (10/14/2009)

The
South Hill Rotary Club took up the widely known Rotary
project of providing a dictionary to each student in
the third grade at South Hill Elementary School.
2008-2009 was the clubs first venture into the
project, so to see to its success it was expanded to
provide a dictionary to all students grade 3-5 and to
provide picture dictionaries to each classroom for
grades k-2. The club also provided one book to every
student in the school to encourage students to read.
The project was an overwhelming success.
The
club has decided to continue with the "Dictionary
Project" with the donations to third graders each
year.
