A
Brief History of the South Hill Rotary Club;
The
South Hill Rotary Club was chartered in August 1928 as a
member club of Rotary International with 22 active members
representing various businesses and community organizations.
The club was sponsored by the Petersburg Rotary Club and has
continued its service to the South Hill area since that time.
Currently
the club is celebrating
79 years of service with 48 active members and 6 honorary
members. The club proudly represents that 4 of its current
active members have a in excess of 200 years of Rotary
Service. These 4 members were involved in the South Hill
Club's sponsorship of the Lawrenceville Virginia Rotary Club
and were recently awarded plaques in recognition of their
participation at Lawrenceville's 50th year celebration.
The
South Hill Club has now also sponsored a new club in
Clarksville Virginia known as the "Lake Country Rotary
Club" with 22 active members. Their charter date is
August 2, 2006.
Our
roster indicates by each members name the year each member
became a part of the South Hill club only (some were members
who transferred to South Hill) and the asterisk indicates that
they are Paul Harris Fellows.
Our
local Rotary club and its members are highly active with
locally based community activities which allow the club to
provide scholarships to local high school students and to
assist in the promotion of reading and learning skills with
our accelerated reading and lunch buddy programs at local
elementary schools. The club, with its commitment to these
noteworthy endeavors is highly regarded by the community for
its earnest participation.
The
club also provides support to other local organizations such
as the Bread Box, Toys for Tots and the Salvation Army to name
a few. The club is often sought out to participate in
community events to provide their fund raising hot dog sales
as a fixture that is consistent and visible to the community
as support for these local programs and events. The vast
majority of the funds generated at these events being returned
to the community in the form of financial support and/or
scholarships.
For
the 100 year “Centennial” project the club raised the
funds to present a clock to the Town of South Hill as part of
the ongoing downtown revitalization. The clock can be seen on
the " About Rotary" page of our site. It is certain
to be a reminder to the local community that the South Hill
Rotary Club has been and will continue to be a part of the
South Hill community. The motto “Service Above Self” is a
serious commitment by Rotarians to offer their time and energy
to the community of South Hill.
