Meeting Highlights

 

	At the club meeting on July 02, 2009 our change of leadership ceremonies were held. Outgoing Club President Herbert Farrar (R) passes the gavel to incoming club president Charles Wright (L).
	We start the new Rotary year by inducting two new members, Heather Chaney and Joseph Taylor. Heather was sponsored by her husband Bud and Joseph was sponsored by Warren Matthews. Jimmie Crowder conducted the induction ceremony. (07/02/2009)
	Paul Sciotto gave a presentation to the club on the counseling services that are available at Community Memorial Hospital. (07/09/2009)
	Steve Rose of Rosemont Winery in Blackridge, VA. presented the club with a wine tasting and a course in growing grapes for the different wines. (07/16/2009)
	Margaret Evans of BB&T Bank talked to the club about personal banking services available at BB&T. (07/23/2009)
	New members Tom Manson, Nick Elmes and Mrugesh Thanawala their sponsors Vin Montgomery, Frank Nanney and Tom Smith. The induction was conducted by D.A.G. Bruce Settle and club president Charles Wright. (07/30/2009)
	District Governor Karlis Graubics made his first visit to South Hill since taking office. He met with the club officers and board members to update the club on his plans for the year. President Charles presented D. G. Karlis with our club banner. (08/06/2009)
	Our guest speaker Mrs. Leigh Lambert, Executive Director of the Southside Regional Library, headquartered in Boydton, Virginia. A very entertaining and informative program. (08/13/2009)
	Our guest speaker Max Crowder, brother of Rotarian Jimmy Crowder, presented an historical account of "Whittles Mill" and the family history of the mill. (08/20/2009)
	District Assistant Governor Bruce Settle conducted the induction for our newest member Charlie Mort Taylor. Rotarian Mickey Moore sponsored our new member. (08/27/2009)
	Rotarian Lisa Clary asked the club to bring school supplies to recent meetings and the response has been very good. Thus far 2 tubs of supplies have been provided by the members and will be delivered during the first week of school. (08/27/2009)
	Paul and Mary Sherwood were our guest speakers. They presented a program on the upcoming "Fall For The Arts At Lake Gaston" event in October. (09/03/2009)
	Rotarian Paul Hamilton gave the club his "story" based on club tradition of a self introduction. He was exceptionally funny. There was great emphasis on San Diego, CA. Welcome aboard Paul. (09/10/2009)
	Assistant District Governor Bruce Settle inducted our clubs newest member Jean Clary Bagley. Jean was sponsored by club President Charles Wright. (09/25/2009)
	The South Hill Club welcomed the Group Study Exchange Team from Brazil to their weekly meeting. The team is visiting several clubs in District 7600 over the next month. The team was given tours of local businesses, schools and of course Lake Gaston. See more photos on our "Events" page. (10/01/2009)
	Our guest speaker C. J. Adcock of Park View High School presented a power point demonstration on his "People To People" trip to Europe. His enthusiasm was contagious as he spoke about his emersion in the culture of Europe and the individual countries visited. (10/08/2009)
	Rotarian Mrugesh Thanawala gave the club his "story" based on club tradition of a self introduction. He was entertaining in his presentation on how he came to the U. S. and how he came to South Hill. "Mr. T" as he is known is a 3rd generation Rotarian. Welcome aboard Mr. T. (10/15/2009)
	Pastor Leon Dorleans of Haiti Outreach Ministries addressed the club about his work in Haiti. His schools have enrolled over 1,100 students. The South Hill Rotary Club is partnering with them by providing water filtering systems in homes. (10/22/2009)
	The South Hill Rotary Club begins collecting teddy bears to donate to Gleaning For The World. This annual collection has produced over 2,500 bears in the last 2 years. Collection will end Nov. 18, 2009. (10/22/2009)
	Our guest speaker Scott Burnett, CEO and President of Community Memorial Healthcenter addressed the issue of health reform and its potential affects not only locally but nationally.(11/12/2009)
	The South Hill Rotary Club officially began collecting for "Toys For Tots) in November. They will be taking items until Dec. 10 and will then present the toys to the Marine Corps League. (11/19/2009)
	Our guest speaker Mr. Chris Riddick spoke to the club about "Gleaning For The World" and its many projects around the world. (12/03/2009)
	Our guest speaker Luanne Bishop gave a presentation on her farm "Waqua Creek Kids" where she raises goats and provides everything from goats milk to soap. Very interesting presentation. (12/10/2009)
	Each year the club has its annual Christmas Party and invites the members spouses. A very fun and festive evening. The members gathered for a photo to send to our adopted soldier in Afghanistan. The photo will accompany 2 boxes of goodies being sent. (12/17/2009)
	Our "adoptee" Captain Kyle Strang, USAF (nephew of Rotarian Randy Cash) received our packages and was promptly raided by other members of his unit. "Everyone" truly appreciated the thoughtfulness and generosity of the Rotary Club members.

	Four members of the South Hill Club are inducted as "Benefactors" of Rotary. This is a choice made by members to make a donation to Rotary in their will. PDG and Rotary Foundation Chair Bob Preston presented the members their certificates. (01/07/2010)
	Our guest speaker Noel Stallard, Exercise Physiologist at Community Memorial Hospital, brought the club up to date on the facilities and capabilities of the new Cancer and Fitness Center in South Hill. (01/14/2010)

	Our guest speaker, Joyce French of Southside Planning Commission, gave the club a detailed look at the numerous successful projects that have been completed by the agency over the last few years. (02/04/2010)

	Guest speaker Chad Springer, son of Rotarian Sue Springer, spoke to the club about his work with Med-Flight. Chad is a fire fighter and paramedic. (03/11/2010)
	President-Elect Randy Cash recently attended the President Elect Training Seminar in Chantilly, VA. During the seminar  Rotary International President-Elect addressed the attendee's.(03/04/2010)
	Our guest speaker Clyde Wilson spoke to the club on the progress of the new soccer complex "Bunny's Field". The club was informed that a professional soccer team "Richmond Kickers" will play an exhibition game with Longwood University in South Hill March 27. (03/18/2010)
	Marcus Hargrave brought the club up to date on the plans for the Y. M. C. A. expansion to new facilities in South Hill. (04/01/2010)
	State Senator Frank Ruff brought the Club up to date on several issues concerning our area as well as some state and national issues. (04/08/2010)
	Our guest speaker Brent Ellenberg of Genworth Financial educated the club about "Reverse Mortgages". A very timely subject. (04/15/2010)
	Our guest speaker Kim Callis, Town Manager of South Hill updated the club on the current revitalization projects underway around town. (04/22/2010)
	Prior to our meeting, guest speaker Kim Callis provided a tour of the Colonial Theatre which is being renovated and has an anticipated opening in late 2010. (04/22/2010)
	A. G. Bruce Settle inducted our newest club member Clyde Wilson. Clyde is a primary factor in bringing soccer to South Hill by creating "Bunny's Field" which is a professional grade soccer field with the intent of providing a venue for tournaments in South Hill. (04/29/2010)

	A special meeting for our club. Two new Paul Harris Fellows were inducted at the recipients home. Bud and Heather Chaney were inducted by D. A. G. Bruce Settle. (05/27/2010)

	Our most prestigious public award each year is the Service Above Self Award. Given to an individual who places Community Service as a major commitment in their life. This years recipient is Rob Crisman. Rob received the award at the Rotary meeting. (06/24/2010)
	Club President Charles Wright has selected Dave Yocum as Rotarian of the Year for 2009-2010. Dave has been responsible for the Club's Food Service trailer and has helped insure the success of numerous fund raising events. (06/24/2010)
	Author Joe Tennis was the club's guest speaker. Joe was accompanied by his daughter Abby. His book is a chronicle of the history along Rt. 58. (07/08/2010)
	South Hill Fire Chief Rosser Wells presented an update on the capabilities of the fire department and a brief history. Jimmy Walker assisted by showing turn out gear and one of the trucks. (07/15/2010)
	Our guest speaker Joyce Lindenmuth presented an update on the status of the Bread Box and its ability to help local families in need of food. (07/22/2010)
	A special night. The club presented Tom Smith with a Service Award. Tom will be moving out of the area later this year. He was the club Secretary an Treasurer for 9 years. Tom will be missed. (07/29/2010)

	District Governor Jayne Sullivan paid a visit to the South Hill Club. We were informed of D. G. Jayne's plans and goals for the new Rotary Year. (08/05/2010)

	Our guest speaker Valinda Dyer brought the club up to date on the upcoming Park View High Class of '70 Reunion. Rotarian Jimmy Crowder's wife Becky was one of Ms. Dyer's teachers. (08/19/2010)

	A special visitor at our meeting. Performer Dwight Moody, also a Rotarian for 33 years paid our club a visit and played his "fiddle" for us. Very enjoyable meeting addition. (08/26/2010)
